So, Which One Should You Actually Buy?

Short version: taped diapers for newborns, and after that, it genuinely depends more on your baby's stage and your own preference than on price.

Here's why.

Newborns Don't Need Pants Yet

A newborn lies still. They don't crawl off the changing mat, and they don't try to stand up halfway through a change.

That's exactly when taped diapers make the most sense. You get a precise, adjustable fit around a tiny body, and there's no real advantage yet to the pull-up design — that only pays off once your baby can stand, since it lets you get a diaper on in one motion instead of wrestling someone flat onto a mat.

It's also barely a choice in practice. Looking at what we track across UAE stores, there's essentially no diaper pants sold in newborn size at all. Taped is the default here, averaging around AED 1.68 per diaper.

Then Your Baby Learns to Roll. And Crawl. And Escape.

Suddenly you're trying to fasten two tabs while your baby rolls over, grabs the wipes, and attempts to crawl off the changing mat mid-change.

This is where diaper pants start earning their keep. No tabs to fasten. No flat surface required. You can change a determined, wriggling toddler standing up, which — once you've tried it the other way a few times — feels like a genuine upgrade.

Are Diaper Pants Actually More Expensive?

We expected a clear answer here. The UAE data doesn't really give us one.

There's no consistent winner. Pants come out cheaper at Size 3 and Size 6, taped wins at Size 5, and Size 4 is close enough not to matter. So if you've been avoiding pants purely because you assumed they cost more — check the actual size you need. It might not be true for you.

This is exactly why we'd say: compare the price per diaper for your specific size before deciding on cost grounds. Don't assume either type is the “budget” option across the board, because right now, it isn't.

What About Overnight?

Nobody wants to be changing cot sheets at 3am.

Taped diapers tend to offer a snugger, more adjustable seal around the legs and waist, which matters more overnight than at any other time of day. If night leaks are a real problem in your house, we'd try taped first, regardless of your baby's age.

Potty Training Changes Things Again

Once you're potty training, pants could become part of the method rather than just a convenience. They go on and off like real underwear, which helps build the habit you're working towards.

Plenty of parents switch to pants around this stage. Others stick with taped diapers well past this point and it works out just fine. There's no rule that says you have to switch.

Our Take

For newborns, we'd start with taped diapers, mainly because pants aren't really available at that size anyway. Once the rolling and crawling starts, we'd let convenience — not price — make the call, since the cost difference could go either way depending on your size. Overnight, taped usually wins regardless of age, unless your baby's already fully in pants for daytime and you'd rather keep one routine.

It comes down to preference as much as anything else. Some parents switch to pants early and never look back. Others stick with taped diapers well into toddlerhood, and that works out just fine too.

Plenty of parents also mix the two — taped diapers at home, pants for daycare, outings, or the airport. Though, airport changing tables and tiny restaurant bathrooms are where pants earn their keep.

Check the Price Per Diaper, Not the Pack Price

A “mega pack” isn't always the cheaper option once you actually work out the cost per diaper — and as the table above shows, the cheaper type can flip depending on the size you need, so it's worth checking rather than assuming.
